Sadie was taken in at her most vulnerable time. Kieran was adopted into the gang out of necessity and can't leave out of fear. Each member looks up to Dutch as a father figure, with reverence and veneration. So where should we begin? At the van der Linde gang being more than just a gang. Was the bump on his head in Chapter 4 the catalyst for why he went crazy? Was it losing Hosea, the one man who kept him in check? Was it Guarma and spending so much time marooned and tired, hungry, and thirsty? Was it all Micah whispering in his ear? Was it paranoia over the Pinkertons? Was it because he was too far east and saw his ideals being completely obliterated as he realized that his fantasy world was coming to an end? What about Heidi McCort, an innocent woman who he shot in the head before any of this other stuff? To me, this is one of the biggest mysteries in the game because it's not a ghost or vampire somewhere, it's instead right there in front of our noses, hidden in plain sight. Rockstar intentionally gave us conflicting and confusing information to determine Dutch's character.
